Week 4 done!

Image
Hello everyone! 丁姊妹 here! I can't believe week 4 is already over! Only 5 more weeks left of MTC and then I'll be heading out! Things have been good this week. Our language learning is combined with our teaching learning so each day we'll go over a principle from a lesson and some phrases that you could say to explain that principle. We practice our accuracy and fluency as well as memorizing. I think the hardest part is trying to come up with our own sentences. The biggest weakness for me right now is vocabulary. I know what I want to say, I just don't know the exact words to say it. We are encouraged to Speak Your Language (SYL) though. This essentially means, just say the words that you do know in Cantonese, even if it's just "I" and "you", and then fill in the blanks with English. I think I've improved over the course of this week but there are still many words I want to learn and many things I want to be able to say. We went over grammar...

MTC Week 3

Léih hóu everyone!  Here's Sister DelHoyo back again with your weekly update. This week we started language learning! It's crazy to think that that was just this week because we've already learned so much! We firstly got our Chinese names so that we could send them in to the Mission (they have to start making our nametags). I just used my surname that I received from my Mandarin class which is 丁(Dīng) so you can call me 丁姊妹 (Dīng jímuih {Sister Ding/ Sister DelHoyo}). We went over four different language learning sections this week. Meet Someone, Offer a Prayer, Testify, and Extend an Invitation. I'm definitely more familiar with the offer a prayer section than anything else because I've been practicing praying in Cantonese everytime I go to pray! I know, however, that as I keep practicing the other lessons and just speaking more, I will feel the language come more easily. I think everyone in my district is doing really well though! I know the tones concept can be r...

First full week at the MTC

Image
Hey everybody! It's Pday again! This week was my first full week of MTC after those three days of MTC I had last week. It was definitely a lot of class, but it feels like it went by pretty quickly. We did lots of roleplay teaching as we learned how to deal with different situations. I think it's getting easier every time. I definitely want to improve my familiarity with the scriptures so I can have more material to relate the lessons to. I just got some colored tabs I can put in my scriptures and I'd like to assign each color to a topic. Hopefully that'll make it easier when I'm looking for a specific scripture. But I think I've done well enough so far. Last week and the beginning of this week, we spent a lot of time on Lesson 1 of Preach my Gospel, but now I feel like we're going through the other lessons so quickly. We're already practicing Lesson 3 and we only spent two days on lesson 2. I think over time I'll definitely know everything better, bu...

Week 1 MTC

Image
Hello everyone!! Welcome to my weekly email list and email number 1! As most of you know, I started MTC this past Wednesday but it is completely online so I've been doing it from home in Santa Clarita. My MTC experience pretty much consists of two things, workshops and classes. Workshops are MTC-wide and are only an hour long each. I've been to three so far. One on Wednesday, one Thursday, and one Friday. A certain amount of workshops are required in the MTC depending on how long your training lasts. Since mine is 9 weeks, we have the most workshops. Each one is on a different subject, all based around helping us become better and more effective missionaries! I've really been enjoying them especially because there are usually around 360 missionaries in the zoom calls. It really helps me feel like I'm a part of a giant community. We're all in the same boat so to speak and we will all be supporting each other. My classes are three hours long each and we usually have t...
